Denominations

So this is a topic of interest to me. There are at least 9 significant denominations of Methodists*, google christian denominations and see what you get. . . over 50. Why are we so seperated? What is so important that each of us stays so far away from each other? There are several non-denomination churches that have started out there, yet for connections they are affilited with other non-denominational churches or several denominations. (*many of the people who visit this blog are some kind of methodist, but we do love everyone!)


We had an interesting conversation in my history class today about free trade and it's affects on today's economy. We all unanimously agreed that free trade just the way it is is not acceptable to our society today. That it created this gap between the rich and the poor that we don't want. Some say we can do nothing, that is inevitable where our society is going. Some of us however say we can change the direction of the world, with moral reform maybe, or standardized human rights, whatever it may be but we don't have to accept the system we have right now.

So what does this have to do with devotions to God? in Matthew 28, the great commission, Jesus tells us to go out and spread the good news!

16Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
also there are many other things that we can do in the world. Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, help the sick, visit the imprisoned. These are all things Jesus encourages us to do.
This is hard!!!! Our busy lives! It's alot. however things are so much easier when we can lean on each other. if someone organizes a visit to the prisions it is easier for us to sign our name and go along verses going alone. We can support and help each other minister to the those Jesus wants us to. However why do we insist on having these little groups of Christians? What are so different about United Methodists compared to African Methodist Epicopal? Can we not talk and join forces? Work as a group of Christians to live out our faith for a better world?

These things may sound idealistic to many but they are possible. Jesus challenges us to do idealistic things, to push the boundries. We don't do these things alone, we have the creator of the universe with us! Pauls secret to life. . . (philippeans 4)
12I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

We can make a difference but not alone!
